If you’ve purchased a rental in the past 8 years, chances are you didn’t find the listing in your local paper but you found it online.  It’s faster, it’s easier and aggregator sites for real estate are readily available for landlords and tenants to find each other.

Two of the most popular paid rental aggregators are Apartments.com and Rent.com.  Both sites have been around for several years and have been leading the trend in advertising rentals online.

While their strategy on the display side may seem odd at first (lack of banner ads), after looking at their success with text ads it made more sense that they would focus on that. Or perhaps, they haven’t quite figured out which banner strategy best works for their brand.  (If so, I highly recommend this post on display strategy secrets ).

On top of their high prevalence score and clever traffic sources, Rent.com is killing Apartments.com with their mobile strategy. Mobile is where a lot of traffic is heading these days and Rent.com is definitely surging ahead of their competitors.

That’s it for this edition of ‘Who Placed It Best’. Remember if you have two contenders you’d like to see go head to head, be sure to mention in the comments or Tweet at @WhatRunsWhere.
